Mechanism

What it is and how it works

At working temperatures, intumescent paint behaves like any ordinary finish. In a fire it stops being paint: above roughly 200 °C it reacts, swells to many times its applied thickness and becomes an insulating barrier that keeps structural steel below the temperature at which it starts to fail — buying the time people need to get out

What it is

  • Dormant until it is needed At normal temperatures it looks and performs like a standard decorative coating, in the colour the project specifies.
  • Passive protection Applied to structural steel, timber and concrete. Nothing to power, trigger or maintain — it works on its own the moment heat reaches it.
  • A time-buying measure Unprotected steel loses much of its load-bearing strength beyond about 500 °C. The coating holds the section below that point long enough for evacuation and firefighting.

How it works

  1. Heat activation The reaction begins at roughly 200–250 °C, well before the steel is at risk.
  2. Gas release A blowing agent in the film releases inert gases such as carbon dioxide.
  3. Expansion Those gases swell the film to 50–100 times its applied thickness.
  4. Char formation The foam stabilises into a rigid, carbon-rich char.
  5. Insulation The char acts as a thermal blanket, slowing heat transfer to the substrate for 30 to 120 minutes.

Thickness shown is relative, not a specification. The actual dry film thickness is set by the section factor of each member and the critical steel temperature, read from the certified loading table of the specified system. Send us your steel schedule and we will return the figure per member.

How we apply it

  1. Step 01

    Surface preparation

    • Substrate dry and clean — free of dust, oil, rust and loose mill scale
    • Compatible anti-corrosive primer for adhesion and a uniform base
  2. Step 02

    Mixing

    • Paddle mixer on a variable-speed drill, minimum 5 minutes
    • Mixing thins the paste to a sprayable consistency — under-mixing causes defects
  3. Step 03

    Application

    • Airless spray for speed and uniform build across large areas
    • Brush and roller for edges, corners and touch-ups
    • Thin coats in multiple passes — never one heavy layer
  4. Step 04

    Thickness and curing

    • Wet film gauge checked continuously against the target for the rating
    • Stable temperature and humidity maintained through cure
    • Compatible topcoat where exposed to weather or moisture

Each stage carries a hold point — work does not proceed until the previous stage is signed off. Dry film thickness is recorded member by member against the tested ASTM E119 assembly and issued as an inspection report for Civil Defense submission.
